Common Questions About Cabinet Refinishing in Huntsville

How long does painted cabinet finish take to dry and cure?

Dry and cured are different. Most cabinet enamels are dry to the touch within hours and can be recoated the same day or the next, so doors are usually back on within a few days. Full cure — when the finish reaches its final hardness — takes much longer, often several weeks depending on the product, film thickness, temperature and humidity. Huntsville's humid summers slow curing, so ventilation and air conditioning help. Until the finish is fully cured, close doors gently, avoid sticky bumpers and harsh cleaners, and don't stack heavy dishes against the shelves' painted edges.

Is it worth refinishing cabinets instead of replacing them?

It usually is when the cabinet boxes are solid and the layout works. Refinishing changes the color and finish and keeps the existing boxes, doors and countertops, so it costs far less than new cabinets and causes much less disruption. Many Huntsville kitchens are good candidates: the median home in the city was built in 1985 (U.S. Census ACS 2024 5-year estimates), an era of solid wood and plywood boxes with dated finishes. Replacement makes more sense when boxes are water-damaged or sagging, doors are peeling thermofoil or delaminating particleboard, or you're changing the kitchen layout anyway.

Can laminate or thermofoil cabinets be painted?

Laminate can be painted if it's in good condition, but it needs thorough cleaning, scuff sanding and a bonding primer made for slick surfaces, or the paint will chip. Thermofoil is a different story: it's a vinyl film heat-bonded over fiberboard, and when it starts peeling — often near the stove or dishwasher where heat builds up — painting over it won't hold. Peeling thermofoil doors usually need to be replaced, while intact boxes can often still be refinished to match.
